Stainless steel castors are renowned world wide as castors that do not stain, rust or corrode in harsh environments. As a result of these properties, stainless steel castors have a wide range of applications from medical, manufacturing and construction to marine environments.  Castors used in these applications have to be able to withstand extremes of conditions, without compromising performance. So what makes stainless steel castors so special? It’s all in the grade!

Stainless steel was first developed over 95 years ago in Sheffield. Today Sheffield is renowned for its steel and stainless steel manufacturing heritage. The most well known product being the Sheffield stainless steel cutlery. However stainless steel has a multitude of applications, from knives right up to buildings. The Chrysler building in New York is clad in stainless steel. This versatile steel alloy, for all you metallurgists and chemists out there, has a minimum content of 11% Chromium. This composition enables the steel alloy to have anti corrosive attributes. As with most things in life, the exacting composition of the steel alloy is very varied. In fact there are over 150 grades of stainless steel available on the market today.

The inability to corrode and rust has meant stainless steel castors can be used in a wide variety of applications. For example, within hospitals and operating theatres the non corrosive and anti bacterial properties of the stainless steel castors have made them the ideal choice. These castors are available in a variety of sizes to suit equipment, beds, machinery and trolleys. The stainless steel castors have a variety of wheels suitable for these harsh environments, from rubber wheels, polyurethane wheels, nylon wheels to temperature resistant wheels.

Hospitals and operating theatres are not the only sanitary environment suitable for stainless steel castors. Their application can also be appropriate within food manufacturing and kitchens. Not only do these castors withstand the water and chemicals associated with keeping the environment clean, but also can withstand extremes of temperature. Stainless steel castors fitted with temperature resistant wheels are often utilised moving trolleys and equipment in and out of ovens. These versatile castors can attach to equipment and machinery easily with either a top plate fitting or a bolt hole castors fitting. This means the castors are suitable for a broad range of equipment and trolleys.

Marine environments pose a significant harsh surrounding for stainless steel castors. However these resilient castors can handle it! Often utilised within marine construction, container movement and rigs and lifting frames. The non corrosive element of stainless steel castors ensure the castors do not rust when exposed to the saline atmosphere.

The stainless steel castors are suited to both light and heavy duty applications. The smallest stainless steel castors can take loads of up to 70 kilos each. For heavy duty applications the castors can take up to 800 kilos each. All this and still withstanding rust, stains and corrosion! So if you operate in extreme conditions, require hygienic products and longevity of performance, stainless steel castors are the most versatile and high performing castors on the market today.
