Stainless Steel Castors are the Brewers Choice!

The Brewing industry and beer, in some form, can be traced back almost 5000 years to the Mesopotamian era where rations of beer and bread where handed to workers. Prior to the purification of water, beer was often the safest dink to consume. In Britain the Celtic tradition for brewing dates back to prehistory, although instead of hopes they often used honey to flavour their ale. The brewing industry today is a multi million pound industry employing thousands of workers. In 2010 the total number of breweries in Britain amounted to over 700, a mixture of multinationals and independent breweries. The modern brewery is made predominantly of stainless steel equipment and castors and automated processes, however in the past this was not the case. Brewing grew from individuals brewing at home to large scale manufacturing plants we have today. In the past villages and monasteries were major producers of beer and the industrial revolution shifted small scale production to larger scale brewing.

The oldest mechanized brewery on record, is in Bavaria Germany, which can trace its history back to the year 1040! These early breweries typically used large copper vats and fermentation took place in lined wooden containers. These types of breweries were common place until the Industrial revolution when scientific, technological and mechanization advances led to a better understanding of the brewing process. Today modern breweries are cathedrals of stainless steel machinery and stainless steel castors.

Stainless steel fermentation vessels, machinery and stainless steel castors are the preferred choice for modern breweries. Stainless steel has favourable characteristics which make it well suited to brewing. Not only does it not impart any flavour into the beer, but also stainless steel machinery and castors are impervious to chemicals, which mean they can be easily cleaned. Stainless steel castors for example do not react to chemicals, and therefore can be cleaned with even the strongest of bleach, and this will not affect its performance. Stainless steel machinery andcastors are also very sturdy and strong. This is vital during the brewing process as machinery, tanks, vessels and castors can be exposed to extremes of pressure and temperature. The preferred wheel within these stainless steel castors tends to be nylon. Again nylon stainless steel castors are resistant to chemicals and incredibly strong and sturdy.

There are several steps to the brewing process to produce the finished article. Stainless steel equipment and castors are utilised at every stage. The seven steps of Mashing, Lautering, Boiling, Fermenting, Conditioning, Filtering, and Filling are typical within the brewing industry. These production stages use stainless steel equipment, often on stainless steel castors to ease production processes. Even the packaging stage of the process will utilize stainless steel castors to maneuver the finished tanks, kegs or bottles for distribution. This ensures as consumers we can access the product from supermarkets, off licenses, pubs and even corner shops!
