Most of our customers only think of replacing castors when the wheel actually falls off. Only this morning a customer came to see us, as his rubber wheel had disintegrated on his battered and worn and bent castor frame. Not only was the wheel battered and worn but the castor frame was dented, warped, dirty and in need of replacing. But waiting until the moment of impending doom and catastrophic castors failure is perhaps a little too late. Luckily at Ross Castors we have thousands of casters on the shelf, where you can shop and collect from us or have them delivered next day!
In order to give our customers some top tips, and perhaps the more obvious indications of castors failure, we have come up with the main five signs that show your castors need replacing.
Castor Wheel Tread misshapen or deformed? Whatever castors you have on your equipment, machinery or furniture, if the tread of the wheel, the wheel surface that rolls on the floor, is unevenly shaped, this indicates a failure. The most common cause of this deformed wheel and wheel tread is misuse and overloading the castors. If the castors are overloaded and then manoeuvred, this can lead to wheel tread failure, and require replacement castors. One of the key factors in deciding how to choose replacement castors is considering the load they are expected to carry.
Castors Housing dented, deformed and affecting the smooth running of the caster wheel? This is so often seen in warehouse and distribution environments, where fork lift trucks are reversed or driven into trolley wheels, easily denting the castor housing. Any dents or deformities will not only affect the manoeuvrability of your castors, but also the loads they can carry. Regularly check your trolley castors to make sure they are in good working order.
Are the castors extremely noisy when you move the trolley, or equipment? This could be a very clear sign your castors need replacing. Often due to a number of critical factors, such as worn out wheels, ball bearings failure and incorrect caster wheels for the job. Ross Castors can rebuild and replace any castors to make them suitable for the job. Choosing the right caster wheel, for your environment, floor surface, temperature range and activity is paramount.
Ball Bearings Missing, or ceased up? In order for castors to swivel and rotate they have cleverly incorporated ball bearings into the castor head and neck. This castor swivel head ball race does need a little care and attention overtime. At Ross Castors we supply castors pre greased, and overtime, and owing to climatic factors, the grease will need continued replacement to keep the ball bearings moving! For high temperature environments we can also offer high temperature grease which doesn’t burn off in ovens and kilns. This is particularly important in food manufacturing processes.
Finding your trolley, or cart hard to push? A sure sign the castors need replacing. Often our customers give the trolley wheels and trolley castors a shot of grease, and if this doesn’t help replacement castors and wheels are required.
