Casters for Furniture hit an all-time high!

Since our casters for furniture were used in ITV’s This Morning we have had an incredible response from the British public, all keen to attach casters onto furniture. We must admit we underestimated the power of television, as we have had huge numbers of customers, designers and manufacturers enquiring about our furniture casters. It seems that as far as interior design goes, any size or piece of furniture is suitable to be placed upon castors to improve its manoeuvrability and add to that designer feel.   You only have to spend half an hour in Ikea to realise that the majority of cabinets, beds, wardrobes, and storage items, can all have optional casters attached.  So if you have a sideboard, sofa, shelves or cabinets that you want to put on casters and wheels where do you start? How do you choose the best caster for the job?

On the ITV This Morning segment with Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen, he and his production company had very clear design ideas, and more importantly to him, a colour scheme.  He wanted to create an industrial feel lounge, with sofas on casters, for easy manoeuvrability. The vision was a loft living space, where furniture on casters could be moved around the space, depending upon the family’s requirements. But as well as the industrial feel, the production company wanted the caster wheel colour to blend in with the overall scheme.  It’s the old design argument of form and function.  Designers may concentrate on form, and we as caster suppliers would focus perhaps a little more on function.

Well we have a three step plan to make your job easier on deciding which caster for furniture is right for you.  Step one, the most important step, is to understand how heavy your item of furniture is. The heavier the piece of furniture, the more robust the caster needs to be. There is no point putting a designer furniture caster on a cabinet, for the caster to fail as its carrying too much weight. Once you have an understanding of the weight of the shelves, sofa or cabinet, you can then choose a castor that can take a third of that weight. Why a third I hear you cry? Well if you place four casters on furniture, you may well expect each caster to take a quarter of the weight? But what happens if your floor surface is uneven, or you move the piece over a cable. Potentially three of the four casters would have to take the full load, as one caster may be raised off the floor, whilst running over a cable.

Step two is, once armed with the load capacity of casters for furniture; you then have to decide on the type of wheel you prefer. Just keep in mind that for hard floor surfaces, softer wheels are preferable, such as rubber wheels.  And for soft floors like carpet, harder plastic wheels, nylon rollers, or polyurethane wheels are preferable.

Step three is have a look at our casters web site, armed with your load capacity and wheel choice,   to choose the best caster for furniture for you. We have 1000’s of casters for furniture in stock and ready for dispatch.  What could be simpler?
