Wood pallets have been around for hundreds of years. Generations for sure and certainly for as long as the forklift truck has been in use. Then again, if you stop to think about it, pallets have always been used on docks to load goods into ships.

The simple answer to that question is yes, and that's for several good reasons. This article about castors should help you to arrive at the same decision. That said, pallets are by no means obsolete and they still have a viable place in materials handling.

Consider that pallets are wide open on all four sides which anyone who has used them knows leads to spillage, and product damage. Now of course wooden pallets are cheaper than cages with castors but you have to ask yourself, how cheap are they if they are the source of ongoing losses in materials, and finished product or merchandise?

Another point to consider is that pallets are cumbersome, and quite difficult to handle. Of course if you have a forklift or one of the smaller roller jack devices that are available for moving them they can be shuffled about. However; in the end when all factors are considered, cages with castors are far more mobile, and definitely a lot safer.

That's right. Let's not forget about safety because once you bring a forklift onto your business or job-site the chances of someone suffering a serious injury skyrockets. In fact people have been killed in forklift accidents and buildings and assets have been as well as your workers. All it takes is a two second lapse of judgment by the driver, and you can have a catastrophe on your hands that wouldn't have happened if the goods had been moved on a cage with castors.

Cages with castors make better deliveries than pallets because they are cleaner and this is something that all too often is ignored until there is an incident. You see, most business managers, and owners give very little thought to where their pallets were before they got them and what was stored on them. It could be anything from dangerous toxic chemicals, to all manner of other unpleasant materials. As long as the castors are made from the right materials then they will stand up to chemical and pressure cleaning time after time.

Of course they are sprayed off before they're sent out to another client, but how well are they sprayed clean? Have you ever stopped to consider that some residual substances have permeated the wood and are capable of being transferred? Steel cages with castors on the other hand, can be cleaned spotless and wheeled into the cleaning area on their castors with ease.

Cages with castors are easier for employees to load materials in and move about with a simple shove. Often there isn't the need to off load the cages to other storage methods as the cages are an effective storage method in themselves. Also don't forget that both electric and manual elevated castors are available for lifting and lowering cages filled with materials or products before rolling out on their castors.
