Ross Handling donates vintage castors for Dementia rehabilitation sculpture

Dementia is a disease which is close to the hearts of everyone here at Ross Handling, so when experienced sculptor and installation artist, Tabatha Andrews, contacted us looking for some wheels for her latest Dementia-inspired project we wanted in!

Dementia is a disease which is close to the hearts of everyone here at Ross Handling, so when experienced sculptor and installation artist, Tabatha Andrews, contacted us looking for some wheels for her latest Dementia-inspired project we wanted in!

After a year spent observing and interacting with Dementia patients at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Tabatha began working on an interactive sculpture designed to aid in the rehabilitation of Dementia patients at the hospital. But the project, named ‘The Dispensary’ still lacked castors suitable for a medical environment which would add character to the piece and remind patients of the past. Tabatha approached Ross Handling for a solution.

“I wanted wheels which would add character to the piece and trigger patient’s memories. The team at Ross Handling made it their mission to find the best solution for my project and even suggested a discrete rubber sole for grip and safety, which is very important in a hospital environment. The 4” vintage castors I bought were perfect.”

For our contribution, we donated eight vintage castors to Tabatha’s second sensory project, ‘Chassis’, which is currently being displayed in the foyer of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Tabatha concludes: “From beginning to end Ross Handling have been efficient, helpful and dedicated to finding the castors that I needed for my project. I am grateful for their kind donation.”

About the project

‘Chassis’ and ‘The Dispensary' are part of a memory-themed project commissioned by Chelsea and Westminster Hospital’s arts charity, CW+ and a private donor as reward for Tabatha winning the First@108 Public Art Award 2015, run by the Royal British Society of Sculptors.
